Camel City Jazz Youth Orchestra
Camel City Jazz Youth Orchestra (CCJYO) is a big band experience for students in high school. It provides the opportunity to explore the individual skills of each student within a supportive ensemble environment, with a concentration on exploring jazz styles, standard repertoire and beginning improvisation. The ensemble is a collaboration between Camel City Jazz Orchestra and UNCSA Community Music School.
Led by Director Benjy Springs, the band brings together students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels to create a fun and motivating introductory experience. Students receive hands-on jazz improvisation training through weekly theory classes at 2 p.m on Sundays, followed by ensemble rehearsals from 3 to 5 p.m. Classes and rehearsals take place at the Community Music School, located in the Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem.
